Behind The Science - STERLOC

COVID-19 came as a big jolt, bringing significant revelations for all of us! The exhaustive and judicious application of sanitizers and disinfectants being a major one of them.

It was then that our product, STERLOC came out as a worthy buy for our customers. It was utilized as an effective hand sanitizer and a multipurpose disinfectant. However, what surprises more is the science behind this safe-to-use all-purpose anti-microbial solution.

The Science

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) forms the prominent component of Sterloc. HOCl is a part of the human body’s natural defense system, produced by white blood cells (WBCs), enabling the body to fight against infections and infectious agents. However, for a product like Sterloc, it was required to produce chemically outside the body.

External Production of HOCl (Sterloc) & Associated Challenges

Production of HOCl was not as such, challenging, as it is nothing but a combination of Water, Salt, & Electricity. However, the HOCl produced chemically outside the body is unstable & is unfit for use & preservation. Hence, our researchers used a novel technology called ElectroChemical Activation (ECA) for the generation of neutral pH and stable HOCl.

ElectroChemical Activation (ECA) Technology

ECA technology uses anodic or cathodic electrochemical exposure to produce meta-stable substances. The activation generally takes place on water (or any other liquid), i.e., dilute aqueous solutions of the substance. The charge effect on the molecules and ions dissolved in the substance transfers it to the metastable state. A similar process enables the production of the stabilized form of HOCl, thus making for an effective disinfectant, Sterloc.

Besides the creation of a stable HOCl, the use of the ECA technology is economical, efficient, and takes care of ecological cleanliness.

Who Is Behind The Science?

No product prepared with such due diligence would have been possible without the efforts and involvement of our core teams. The mission started with the proposal brought forward by our Strategy & Business Development team that collaborated with the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), thus giving a significant stamp to our product. A special thanks to our Research teams (Pre-clinical, Formulation & Development, and Microbiology) for coming up with such a solution & taking up the challenges involved. Finally, our Marketing team for developing the OTC product and taking care of its distribution.

Additionally, many other teams come into the picture, including the ones involved in packaging or promoting the content physically or digitally. The product also became critical in one of our initiatives - Disinfection Wali Gaadi, wherein we ensured the disinfection of several places across Mohali, Chandigarh, and Panchkula during COVID-peak periods.

Benefits

While we now know, at least to an extent, the “behind the science scenes” of Sterloc, we must leave you behind with the benefits of the product.

  • An effective disinfectant with the requisite virucidal and bactericidal characteristics.
  • The composition of simplistic and organic components makes it safe for use anywhere and by anyone.
  • The non-corrosive, non-flammable, and non-toxic features give it an extra edge over other similar products.

In a nutshell, it is a lifestyle product - to be used at home, office, schools, restrooms, other public places, while traveling, and so on.
